Autumn - first half term
Black History Month
In October we spent time looking at key figures in black history across a range of lessons. As well as learning about Harriet Tubman and Rosa Parkes, we also looked quite a bit at Nelson Mandela. This ended with all the children in each class joining together to make a joint picture of him. In our pictures we wanted to show that each colour is as important as the others and every square is as important as the others and that the picture looks wonderful BECAUSE of the different colours in it.
Here is what we did....
Welcome to Year 5!
We just wanted to share with you some information about our work with the children this year.
Most of our routines are now back to normal following the recent COVID pandemic. The end doors will open for the children at 8.40 with lessons starting at 8.50. Lessons finish at 3.10 and we will be bringing the children out of the same doors just after that.
Our PE day is Tuesday. PE is in the afternoon so the children will need to come to school in uniform at the start of the day and will get changed into their school PE kit after lunch. This term we will also be having Forest school on the same afternoon. School does have sets of waterproof clothes for the children but it would help if the children could bring in their own pair of wellies, if they have them, as school’s stock of the larger sizes is a bit limited!
We have many topics planned for the year including Anglo-Saxons and ancient Egyptians in history, mapping skills and rainforests in geography and forces and electricity in science, and lots of exciting books in English.
The children will be encouraged to take their reading books home and read to an adult at home as often as possible, but this needs to happen at least once a week. There will be at least one other piece of homework each week which may be in homework books or on dbPrimary. All the children will be reminded of their usernames and log-ins.
If you would like to speak to us, we will be in the school yard at the end of each day or contactable through the school office.
We are really looking forward to a great year together,
Miss Akram & Mr McKenna
